But let us first agree, what we mean with mindfulness. To me it is about our ability and skill to clear our mind in order to free its’ energy to a single task. There is also the aspect of clearing our mind of the ”noice” arising from our environment. The reason why this has arisen so strongly in the last decade is obvious. We have no the tools to distract ourselves from everything 24/7/365. Smart phone, social media, ability to connect with whom ever anywhere on this planet and ongoing news feed provide us great opportunities to ”hunt” for something all the time. And this ”hunting” is what is one of the keys here. Hunting is putting as on higher level of brain operation. Failing in hunting for most of mankind’s history meant starving, even dying.

The thing we need to accept is rather simple. It is that the world has, is and will be going on, even we are not in full control of everything. But what if we loose that once in a lifetime opportunity? What if the world is going to collapse and we don’t see it? There are 4 future scenarios; A) Business as usual, B) evolution, C) revolution and D) chaos. The 2 first ones carry on and cause no major problem. The 2 latter ones are what we need to think about. We cannot stop either of them! And in most cases we even shouldn’t waste our energy on trying to stop them. When we are NOT BUSY, when we are in a mindfulness stage of mind, those two become OPPORTUNITIES. After every chaos, every revolution, we see how some people and organization have come out better and stronger. Be that of Nokia, be that Europe after WWII, be that a person having fought cancer. But the point is, that in such cases there has been a very clear and valuable goal. Something that we are willing to clear our mind for. Something which helps us to ignore the distractions and disturbances.

Accepting that we must let go of full time scanning of everything is the key to mindfulness. Are you multitasking? If so, you are extending your workdays with about 30% (that much more time is needed, when we do multiple things at the same time). Are you an emergency personnel? If not, then there is no need, nor benefit, of you being on call all the time. What would (I mean really) happen, if your computer would check emails only every 30 minutes? I know, it is hard to live with that. But let me tell you, even a news addict like I, learnt to live with that in about a week. And nothing has collapsed.

Accepting that the habits we have are the outcome of ”hunting” is the first step. Accepting that important things (which take 20% of time but deliver 80% of results) will always live long enough for us to see, is the second steps. The third step is in making the little changes in daily routines; email checking frequency, social media follow up to certain periods of the day and having a short recovery break every day at lunch (you eat lunch?) take you far. You are more in the mindfulness mode, have more brain power for the truly important stuff and most important of all, you are better in recognizing the lurking opportunities!

There are number of ways to make define the core strength we can use to succeed. You just need to stop see what were the tings that have helped you in changing your behavior in the past. And then use the same method in implementing the new behavior. One at a time.

Mindfulness is not a trick, it is not a mystery for our brain. They love doing one thing at a time! And you benefit from doing that, in better quality and higher results.

We must be careful, that we don’t use mindfulness as an excuse! That we don’t push forward things as they would be true saying that they are the outcome of our mindful thinking. Focusing on something from a single point of view is easy, but gives limited results. That kind of thinking is not using mindfulness. It is simply just pushing on idea forward. The ”final” thing to accept is that mindfulness is focused openness. We are in the focused mood and at the same time we have our mind open for multiple solutions!

Practicing mindfulness start always with accepting our created limitations, our emotional intelligence structure. I have seen, how just one assessment and feedback session has helped people to reach next level. Contact me, if you’d like to know more!

There are simple principles, that we all should, and can, follow. Too fast means that we need to slow down. Too slow means that we need to stop to see what is really holding us back. |
