I was watching the program called Brain Games (National Geographic – channel) to other day. There they had given people a task which those people were supposed to carry on, no matter what happened. And then something unexpected happened. Most people stopped, moved etc. Even the ”best” ones merely stopped their activity. And there is a very clear reason for that! It is the ”Lizard” brain. The main task of that part of our brain is to keep us alive. And to react to any possible threat as fast as possible. In well under a second. It makes a choice between risk – no risk. Only after that the information gets to the next level, the ”social” brain. Here we further process the information. Our brain looks, if there is a similar case from the past and how we behaved there? If the outcome of the old behavior was not too bad, we are likely to choose that as a new solution. And only after that we start to build rational explanations and solutions that support the chosen behavior.
This takes, if we have time, about 1,5 – 3 seconds. To take the process in our own control, we need to have time to review what happened. The choices made by our brain. Was it an automated response the prepare for fight or escape (and these can well be purely mental). Or did we choose to play it safe and ignore, so that we don’t open the door for some exploration, where we might end up in some dangerous situation? Or was there something, that we felt interesting enough, that we wanted to explore it more? All this happens in a couple of seconds. And, as researchers have found out, for about 98% of the time we are operating on full automation.
When you want to control your future, instead of being prisoner of the past, you need a little more time. This is the entire 3 seconds! In that time, specially after a little practice, you can use your rational brain in a new way. Instead of accepting the outcome of Lizard and Social, through it back to the Social. Ask yourself ”why did I come to this reaction, feeling?”. When you master this, you do get to the level of skills, where you can actually ask this more than once. This is the key to learning AND better decisions. |
Most people tell me, that they are not operating on automation. That they are fully aware of what they do. Well, a very good way to look at how our brain really works, is to follow the Brain games. Or go to watch how a magician plays with our mind. Have you ever found yourself in a situation, where you have had a ”wicked” problem that you have not been able to solve. And then, when someone shows how it can be solved, you’ve got the feeling, how I did not see that? Well, that was your brain, making a choice and locking it in. HBR has studied teams. Their immutable findings show, that diversity in teams bring better results. Diversity causes disturbances in peoples ways of thinking, which is the key in finding new solutions! Disruption is vital for development.
Disruption is a process, not something happening by chance. Your 3 seconds are the way to disrupt your patterns of thinking in conscientious way. That is the time you need in order to use your brain the best possible ways. I’ve been asked if mindfulness is the same thing. It is not. Mindfulness is about calming down the turmoil you have in your mind. Calm moments are a necessity for our mental well being. But calming might lead to silencing the little ”jingle bell” which is telling you of awakening of new thinking.
3 seconds for reflection and mindfulness are not contradicting each others. If you have too much going on, you won’t be able to spend that 3 seconds, if you are too calm, you a likely to focus on staying calm. Like in everything else, this is about balance. Be active, but make sure that being active is not your main driver!
To succeed in that 3 seconds, one must understand what are the core drivers on ones personality? For me one of the core drivers is adaptability. I like to explore new options. And at some point that is also my limiting factor. I am driven by new things, even the old solutions and projects would need my attention. For me that 3 seconds is crucial. It helps me to answer the following questions: ”why is this interesting, really?” + ”is this truly supporting the goals I have for me?” + ”if this is worth doing, who would be the right person to do this?”.
I’m lucky in the sense, that I know my personality structure (my emotional intelligence structure, which is the key component in leading my thinking). If you don’t know yours yet, you most likely would benefit from taking a professional assessment and learning more about your personal drivers! If you need help, drop me a line! |
